The Consulate of Italy in Detroit held a special event at The War Memorial in Grosse Pointe on Monday, June 2 to celebrate Festa della Repubblica, also known as Italian National Day.

Festa della Repubblica celebrates the day in 1946 when Italians chose to form a republic. The day is similar to Bastille Day in France or Fourth of July in the United States.

At the event, Italian culture and tradition were celebrated with a variety of restaurants offering samples of their Italian foods. Italian Consul Allegra Baistrocchi conferred the title of Cavaliere and the Ordine Della Stella D’Italia from the Italian government on three deserving Italian-Americans: Danielle D’Amica Henderson, Sandro DiNello and Angela Piazza.

It is a prestigious Italian national honor bestowed upon individuals who have made significant contributions to promoting Italian culture, enhancing Italy’s prestige abroad, and fostering friendly relations between Italy and other countries. Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer also proclaimed June 2, 2025, as Italian National Day in Michigan.
