La Tribuna del Popolo
Festa della Repubblica is the Italian national
holiday celebrated every June 2. This is a day to remember the institutional referendum held June 2-3, 1946, by which the Italians were called to the polls to express their views on what form of government, monarchy or republic to choose for Italy. After 85 years reign, with 12,717,923 votes to 10,719,284, Italy became a republic and the monarchs of the House of Savoy were exiled.
June 2 celebrates the birth of the nation of Italy, similar to the French, July 14 (Bastille Day) and the U.S., July 4 (Independence Day).
In addition to worldwide Italian embassies holding celebrations, special ceremonies are held in Italy. Currently, the ceremony includes the laying of a wreath at the Unknown Soldier in Rome and a military parade in the presence of the highest offices of state.
The ceremonies continue in the afternoon with the opening of the public gardens of the Quirinale Palace, seat of the presidency of the Italian Republic, with musical performances by the bands of the Italian Army, Italian Navy, Italian Air Force, Carabinieri, State Police, the Guardia di Finanza, the Corps of Penitentiary Police Corps and Forest Service.
Principal speaker for this event will be Massimo Risi, Fiat Group Automobile SPA’s International Manufacturing Operations director. Special guest speaker will be attorney Lucia DiCicco. After a formal program, a food tasting event sponsored by over 20 Italian clubs and organizations will be open for all to enjoy. Tables will also display objects and information regarding the various regions of Italy. The event is sponsored by The Council of Presidents, The Italian American Cultural Society, The Italian Consolate of Detroit – Marco Nobili and The Comitato Degli Italiani al Estero.
