Holy Family Church
The largely Italian-American church will host the Feast of the Madonna del Ponte, with an 11:30 a.m. Italian Mass. The church is at 641 Chrysler Drive (just off the Lafayettte Exit off I-75 in Detroit).
Italian Film Festival USA of Metro Detroit
The Italian Film Festival opens its two-week run with Grazie Ragazzi at 7 p.m. at the Detroit Film Theater in the Detroit Institute of Arts. The comedy revolves around Antonio, a passionate but often unemployed actor. Faced with a lack of job offers, he accepts a job as a teacher of a theater workshop in a penitentiary institution. Hesitant at first, he discovers talent in the unlikely company of prisoners and this rekindles his passion and desire to do theatre. Antonio manages to convince the prison director to stage Samuel Beckett’s famous play Waiting for Godot on a real theater stage. Day after day the inmates let themselves go, discovering the liberating power of art and its ability to give purpose and hope beyond expectation. Films are in Italian with English subtitles. Utica Puppy Parade
April is National Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month, and Utica Mayor Gus Calandrino invites the public to the city’s annual Puppy Parade in Grant Park at 2 p.m. to celebrate. The parade ends at Pioneer Park where animal advocate groups and food trucks will be set up.
DEA National Drug Take Back Day
In cooperation with the Sterling Heights Police Department, Michelle Vitale-Hayes, of St. Michael Catholic Community (a largely Italian community) announces the National Drug Take Back Day at the church. Bring all your unused/expired prescription and over-the-counter medications to St. Michael Catholic Community in Sterling Heights for curbside disposal from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. (no needles please).
